The Skoda Yeti was one of the original small family SUVs, and it's still an appealing car. Skoda's combination of a wide, tall body and proven engines and gearboxes has made the Yeti a practical, dependable option that can also be economical to run, providing you pick the right version.

However, in recent years the small SUV market has exploded, and competition for the Yeti is now much fiercer than it once was. Cars in this class have to be economical, spacious, and feature enough equipment to keep both the driver and passengers entertained.

Rivals for the Yeti range from the cheap and compact SsangYong Tivoli through to one of our current class leaders, the Nissan Qashqai.

While the Yeti is starting to feel dated in a few areas, it still has a lot on its side. Skoda has always represented value for money, and the company is famed for producing practical cars. So, for those wanting the practicality of an SUV but the driveway footprint of a hatchback, it's a logical step up.

Does the Skoda Yeti still perform well next to the more modern competition, and will it be as easy on your wallet as we'd like? Read on to find out.
