Controversial. It's not a word that's traditionally been associated with the Skoda Octavia. However, when the current version of this family hatchback was updated in 2017, the safe – or, it could be said, rather forgettable – looks of its predecessor gave way to the unusual split headlights that are either eye-catching or an eyesore, depending on your point of view.

Otherwise, though, it is essentially a tweaked version of the car that's been on sale since 2012 – and that's no bad thing, because the Octavia has always been one of the most practical cars in its class.

Rivals are numerous, to say the least, and include the Ford FocusSeat LeonVauxhall Astra and Volkswagen Golf. Most have less space for passengers and all have less room for their luggage. But there’s more to a family car than simply space, right?

Indeed there is, so read on over the next few pages and we’ll reveal what’s good and not so good about the Octavia and whether you should buy one over its rivals. Whatever car you settle on, don’t forget you can buy it with the minimum of fuss and for the best price through our New Car Buying service just by clicking here.
