Fancy a Lombardyexperience? top tip? If you need family transport try a Seat Ateca SUV: it’s ace. It’s our favourite SUV. Ah, but what if you don’t fancy an SUV? What if you want to buck this trend for high-rise cars and go for an old school, low-rise estate instead? No problem: may we present the handsomely styled Seat Leon ST estate.

This is the third generation of the Leon, which has been on sale since 2012. Just like with the hatchback model it was recently refreshed, bringing an updated 1.6-litre diesel engine, a new 1.0-litre turbocharged petrol and extra safety kit. Meanwhile, on the inside it gained a larger infotainment screen, a space-saving electronic handbrake and the option of wireless smartphone charging.

Under its skin the Leon is closely related to in-house VW Group rivals, the Audi A3, Skoda Octavia and Volkswagen Golf. Rivals from outside this circle include the big-selling Ford Focus and Vauxhall Astra.

The Leon ST offers diversity, too. Not only available as a regular estate, it also comes as a high-performance Cupra 300 model with 296bhp and the rugged-looking X-Perience version – think of this as a halfway house between an estate and an SUV, with its jacked up suspension and four-wheel drive.

Keep reading on and we’ll let you know which engine, trim level and options make for the best buy.
