What's the used Peugeot 3008 estate like?

The French have often been trend-setters both in style and engineering, but they have been surprisingly late to the small SUV party. Happily for them, the Peugeot 3008 is remarkably good, making up for their tardiness.

Whereas the previous incarnation had elements of MPV about it, the styling of the second-generation 3008 is all SUV, with its tall, blocky, black-plastic-clad exterior leaving you in no doubt of its prowess as a tough, urban-biased assault vehicle for the school run.

To drive, the 3008 has a softer ride than most in its class and manages to soak up the worst of the road furniture with aplomb. Sharp ruts can upset it during cornering, where rivals like the Seat Ateca seem to perform better. But on the whole, it’s very good. The steering is precise and quick at low speeds, too – helped partly by its small steering wheel.

It is inside the 3008 where Peugeot has made the biggest strides. The interior is a little different from most, with that small steering wheel and a relatively high seating position, not only to give you the elevated driving position of an SUV, but also so that you can see the dials over the top of the steering wheel rather than through it. Once you get over the initial novelty of it, you settle into what is a very stylish interior. The majority of buttons have been relegated to the 8.0in colour touchscreen.

All models get a 12.3in digital instrument display instead of more traditional dials, and this is configurable depending on what information you want it to show. It is Peugeot’s take on Audi’s Virtual Cockpit and helps to set the 3008 apart. It may not be quite as slick or quick as its German rival's, but it is certainly on a par with the infotainment systems in the Renault Kadjar and Nissan Qashqai.

Engines range from a turbocharged 1.2-litre three-cylinder petrol all the way up to a powerful, if unrefined, 2.0-litre diesel with 178bhp. The higher-powered 2.0 diesel (there's also a 148bhp version) comes as standard with an automatic gearbox. Furthermore, there is a 163bhp turbocharged 1.6-litre petrol engine that is also fitted with an automatic gearbox as standard.

Our recommendation would be to choose the 1.2 turbo petrol or 118bhp 1.6-litre diesel engine, because they are both smooth and refined yet offer good fuel efficiency.

It may have taken them a while to get there, but the Peugeot 3008 is a practical, spacious and stylish SUV that also has one of the best interiors Peugeot has fitted to one of its cars.
