What are the safest cars on sale today?

The first three cars tested by Euro NCAP in 2019 – the Seat Tarraco, Honda CR-V and Mercedes G-Class SUVs – all achieved the maximum five-star rating for safety.

All three are fitted with AEB technology that can detect cyclists and pedestrians as well as other vehicles. They're also fitted with intelligent speed assistance systems, which are among the new technologies MEPs voted in favour of becoming mandatory safety equipment on all new cars earlier this year.

The measures also include new crash testing requirements and mandatory installation of driver assistance systems including automatic emergency braking (AEB) with pedestrian and cyclist detection, overridable intelligent speed assistance (ISA) and emergency lane-keeping assistance.

They also include the installation of black boxes, which record critical information on the status of a vehicle in the moments before a collision and, as in aviation, could help crash investigators understand the causes in order to help prevent future accidents. The new vehicle safety standards that could apply to all new cars sold in the EU within three years.

Proof that car safety standards are already improving all the time, was highlighted by results published by the crash test experts at Euro NCAP in 2018. The safety organisation retested the latest version of the Fiat Panda, a car that was awarded four stars when it was originally tested in 2011. However, the Panda's new rating is zero stars, whereas most new models tested in the that year earned the maximum five stars.

So, what are the safest cars on sale? Well, below, we've listed every new car that has earned a five-star rating from Euro NCAP since 2013. We've also indicated which cars receive a five-star rating only when equipped with an optional pack.

A car's absence from this list doesn't imply that it is unsafe; it may have been launched before 2013 or hasn't been tested yet. We've also detailed each car's percentage score for each of Euro NCAP's tests.
