How to spec a BMW 1 Series
Our guide to BMW's family hatchback covers which options to pick, which to avoid and how much to pay for it all...
The BMW 1 Series sits at the top end of the family car market, among premium rivals such as the Audi A3 and Mercedes A-Class. These three German-made hatches are closely matched in many areas, but the 1 Series stands out thanks to its best-in-class infotainment system, good performance and low company car costs – all of which make it especially appealing to business drivers.
Go for our recommended 118d version, with its 148bhp 2.0-litre diesel engine, and you'll have plenty of power at your disposal, although there are also more powerful options to choose from. SE models come with plenty of kit as standard, too, including air conditioning, automatic lights and wipers and 16in alloy wheels. If you expect to spend a lot of time in your car, however, you might want to add some choice luxuries, without blowing your budget. Here's what we'd choose.
Media Pack Professional (£900)
This pack bundles together several popular infotainment options, including an upgraded 8.8in infotainment screen, online music streaming and a digital screen in the instrument cluster which shows you the most relevant driving information.
Interior comfort package (£460)
This upgrade includes extended interior lighting, which improves the on-board ambience after dark; and dual-zone climate control, which will improve comfort on longer journeys.
