Citroën C5 Aircross
Citroën's largest SUV model offers a smooth ride and is quiet at motorway speeds, its engines are fairly frugal. It's not quite big enough inside to match the best in this class, though, and nor does it come with the option of seven seats.

The Kuga offers a reasonable amount of space inside and has a strong record for reliability. Ford regularly offers sizeable discounts, too, so prices are kept competitive. The interior looks a bit cheap, though.

Hyundai's family SUV counts the big-selling Nissan Qashqai and the excellent Seat Ateca among its key rivals, so the stakes couldn't be higher. We've been impressed with its spacious interior, and the fact that you get a lot of equipment as standard. Hyundai offers an impressive five-year, unlimited-mileage warranty too.

The smallest Jaguar SUV is well equipped and offers a great driving position, but rivals are mostly better to drive. It should hold onto its value well, though.

If you're looking for a less pricey family SUV, then the Kia Sportage should definitely be on your list. You generally get a lot for your money – both in terms of space and equipment – and resale values are good too.

Kia's largest SUV offers lots of space for seven and is a good choice if you plan on towing regularly. The sole engine on offer is a 2.2-litre diesel which is punchy, if not particularly fast. KX-2 models come fairly well equipped, too.

On the face of it, the fact that Mazda's largest SUV doesn't offer the option of seven seats puts it at a disadvantage. However, if you don't need to transport more than five people, it's one of the very best cars of its kind – it's comfortable, spacious and good to drive, and comes with a frugal petrol engine.

The GLA is essentially a jacked-up version of the regular Mercedes A-Class family hatchback. It offers an eye-catching interior design and comes with plenty of standard equipment, but rivals are better to drive. At least this diesel version should bring low running costs.

You can't go far wrong with a Qashqai – indeed, it's consistently one of the best-selling family SUVs in the UK. There's a range of efficient engines on offer, and the ride is comfortable if you stick with smaller wheels. You miss out on some of our recommended safety kit on lower trims, though.

Think of the X-Trail as a bigger version of the Qashqai with two extra seats on board. Those seats may only be suitable for short journeys, but they make the X-Trail more versatile than the five-seat rivals it’s priced to compete with.
