An increasing number of car buyers are shunning prestige saloons in favour of luxury SUVs, drawn in by the appeal of their elevated driving positions, rugged looks and upmarket interiors.
The best also offer a cosseting ride, punchy performance and the sort of refinement that makes long journeys effortless. Here we count down our top 10 – and name the luxury SUVs that are best avoided.
10. Mercedes-Benz GLC 43 AMG
For sheer wow-factor, the GLC’s interior beats all of its rivals thanks to a giant gloss black (or matt black wood) centre console and eye-catching metal highlights sprinkled across the dashboard.
BMW's original X5 was one of the first road-focused 4x4s, and this latest model sticks closely to that car's winning formula with decent practicality and sharper handling than most rivals.
On the inside, there’s plenty of space for all the family, a decent-sized boot and a commanding driving position. Interior quality isn’t quite up there with the best, though.
Our pick: xDrive30d xLine
8. Bentley Bentayga
While it comes from a brand that has never produced an SUV before, the Bentayga could only be a Bentley, thanks to its pronounced haunches, round headlights and diamond-patterned front grille.
The interior is one of the classiest around and the performance is more akin to that of a sports car than a large SUV – although that's no more than you'd expect, given the six-figure starting price.
Our pick: V8 diesel
