10 reasons to buy an Audi Q7

The Audi Q7 is one of the very best large SUVs around. That's why we named it our at the most recent Lombardyexperience? Awards.

The Q7 is a technical tour de force - its interior is luxuriously appointed and spacious, and even entry-level cars come loaded with all the kit you're likely to need. There's also a hybrid version if you're tempted by the idea of zero-emissions motoring, and a hot sports version, too.

See Autocar's verdict on the performance-oriented Audi SQ7 in the video below.

So, tempted by the idea of an Audi Q7? Here are 10 reasons why you should take the plunge.

10 reasons to buy an Audi Q7

10. Comfort behind the wheel

There's plenty of adjustment inside the Q7, meaning most drivers will be able to get comfortable very quickly. Upgrade to S line specification and you swap the supportive standard seats for sports seats with four-way lumbar adjustment.

9. Equipment bonus

Stick with entry-level SE trim when speccing up your Q7, as this will get you all the kit you're likely to need. Sat-nav, dual-zone climate control, Bluetooth connectivity and xenon headlights are all included. If you want to splash out, S line models get 20in alloys and privacy glass.

8. Easy to park

Like most large SUVs, the Q7's tall body and high driving position make it easy to see out of - a bonus when parking. Front and rear parking sensors are standard, and you can pay extra for a rear-view camera and a self-parking system if you wish.

7. Five-star safety

Euro NCAP awarded the Q7 its top five-star rating for safety, and all models come with automatic emergency braking as standard. Adaptive cruise control and a towing assistance system are on the options list.

6. Diesel power

Whichever engine you choose in the Q7, you'll be getting a strong performer, but we reckon the more powerful 3.0-litre diesel, with 268bhp, is worth the small premium it commands. Both the diesel engines work well with the standard eight-speed automatic gearbox.

5. Seats for seven

If you do find you need to carry seven passengers, then two extra seats can be raised up from the Q7's boot floor at the touch of a button. They're reasonably spacious, too.

4. Green credentials

If you like your large SUVs eco-friendly, then take a closer look at the Q7 e-tron. This plug-in hybrid can travel for 34 miles on electric power alone, and is said to return an impressive 156.9mpg.

3. Quiet performer

Refinement is important in a luxury SUV, and fortunately the Audi Q7 has it in spades. After some initial clatter from a cold start, the engines settle down to a background hum, and you'll rarely hear them thereafter.

2. Quality inside and out

There's no denying that the Audi badge is desirable these days, and the brand's reputation for quality runs deep. The Q7's interior all feels great, with plenty of soft-touch materials and damping around the switches. Audi's MMI infotainment and satellite navigation system are a joy to use, too.

1. Lots of luggage? No problem

Even among the leviathans of the SUV class, few cars can match the Audi Q7 for sheer space. You'll have no complaints from front or rear passengers, and even with all seven seats in place, there's enough room for some medium-sized suitcases in the boot.

With the Q7 range starting from £48,455, it's among the more expensive choices in this class. It's definitely a very worthy luxury SUV, but don't forget there are cars that offer similar space and versatility for a lot less money. In particular, take a look at other large SUVs like the Land Rover Discovery Sport and Mazda CX-5 before you come to a final decision.

What about buying used?

10 reasons to buy an Audi Q7

The original Audi Q7, which came to market in 2006 and lasted until 2015, was a truly premium SUV. It was Audi's first attempt at a car of this type, and a combination of desirable badging, upmarket interior and go-anywhere ability made it a big hit with families seeking a luxury 4x4.

You can pick up an Audi Q7 for as little as £8500 these days, but if you're after our recommended 230bhp 3.0-litre diesel model, then your budget should run to at least £11,500 for a car that's done less than 100,000 miles.

The good news, especially if you go for a high-mileage car, is that the Q7 has a generally good record for reliability. Just watch out for uneven tyre wear - the fronts tend to wear much faster than the rears - and look closely for any small electrical issues when you go for a test drive.

Do bear in mind that running and maintaining a car of this size is never going to be cheap. The 3.0 TDI diesel returns a claimed 27.2mpg, so plan to spend a considerable amount of time at the pumps. If you're buying it as a company car note that all models have high CO2 emissions, which will impact on your tax bill.
