Every so often, a car comes along that is so innovative, or so accomplished relative to its peers, that it single-handedly changes the face of the automotive sector. The new Audi Q3 is not one of those cars. But that’s not to say it isn’t worth your attention – far from it, in fact
A rival to family SUVs such as the BMW X1, Mercedes GLA and Range Rover Evoque, the Q3 has been a resounding success for Audi, with more than 1.1 million (and counting) sold since it arrived in 2011. For context, that leaves the Audi TT, one of those aforementioned game-changers, trailing in its wake, with ‘only’ 600,000 sold over the past 20 years.
So, despite being as predictable as the tide and the moon, this second-generation Q3 is a big deal. And with new SUVs being launched or updated on a near-weekly basis, the Q3 has arguably never faced stronger competition. After all, at this price level, it isn’t just space and practicality that are important; buyers also expect refinement, comfort and quality – qualities our current Car of the Year and another Q3 rival, the Volvo XC40, has in spades.
With this in mind, the new Q3 is not only larger inside and out than its predecessor, but it also sports a more grown-up exterior design, with a larger, octagonal grille, more pronounced shoulder lines and slimmer LED headlights. The result is a much more angular look, bringing the Q3 in line with Audi’s range-topping SUV, the coupé-styled Q8.
